There are many benefits to specifying curtain walling, but what things should be considered for successful specification?
- Type of system
- Drainage requirements
- Ventilation requirements
- Structural elements
- Aesthetics
What are the regulations that apply?
There are a number of regulations and standards that apply when designing or specifying a curtain walling system. These include:
- Building Regulations
- Part F: Ventilation
- Part L: Conservation of Fuel & Power
- Part N: Glazing‚ Safety in Relation to Impact, Opening & Cleaning
Standards
- BS 6262 Code of Practice for Glazing of Buildings
- BS 6399 Wind Load CWCT testing
- BS EN 12207 Air Permeability
- BS EN 12208 Watertightness
- BS EN 12210 Resistance to Wind Load
- BS EN 13830 Specification for Curtain Walling
Codes of Practice
- Code for Sustainable Homes
- BREEAM
Testing
Regardless of solution chosen all curtain walling systems should be tested in accordance with Centre for Window and Cladding Technology (CWCT). This testing process applied the three main design principles of a curtain walling system: air tightness, wind resistance and air penetration.
